Tesco DVD 1030 Player

Tesco DVD 1030 Player

Tesco

The Tesco DVD 1030 Player is sold exclusively through their own stores and is made for them by Technika. Retailing for an astonishing £17.84, the Tesco DVD 1030 Player is a no frills entry level machine.

The Tesco DVD 1030 Player is a very compact design, there is no time display just a couple of basic control buttons, a power on/off switch and a front loading disc tray. Build quality is naturally a bit on the cheap side, but we are talking about a sub £18 dvd player here. Build quality for a £18 dvd player is never going to be high on the list of priorities, the main criteria for a dvd player of this cost is whether it can play discs reliably.

To be fair to the Tesco DVD 1030 Player, I have to admit it does work and function very well if a tad noisy. I tested it with a variety of retail and blank dvdr +/-, and it rejected none. The instruction manual does state it is compatible with DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-DA, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and Picture CD and I have no reason to doubt this claim given the initial findings. It also by the way in my tests coped admirably with Infinti DVD-R as well. The only format it will not play is MPEG4 although there is MP3 compatibility which is a bonus.

Picture and audio quality was extremely acceptable and assuming you are not going to connect it to a 42" plasma screen, should be more than adequate for most peoples' needs. At £18 a pop, most of these machines are going to end up in a child's bedroom or the kitchen connected to a small portable so few will be able to find fault with the picture and audio resolution.

Analogue audio output on the Tesco DVD 1030 Player is restricted to 2 channel only, although 5.1 audio can obtained via the digital out at the rear. On board Dolby Digital and DTS decoding is included as well and all in all the Tesco DVD 1030 Player was very easy to set up out of the box.

Outputs on the back of the Tesco DVD 1030 Player are also generous and include SCART, composite, SVHS, SPDIF and RCA stereo phonos.

At under £18, it is almost impossible to criticise the features on offer and I can recommend the Tesco DVD 1030 Player as secondary player. The unit has already had very successful sales and I see no reason why this will not continue in the run up to christmas.

One other added bonus about the Tesco DVD 1030 Player which i stumbled upon whilst doing a google search is that it is very simple to make it region free. All you have to do is carefully follow the instructions from the link below and voila your Tesco DVD 1030 Player is now region free making it probably one of the world's cheapest region free players out there.

Hi Toby,

We have a to agree that the Tesco DVD 1030 players can be a little noisy but what do you expect for £18 and given that its use will be mainly by kids etc - does it really matter ?

This unit does NOT have RGB. Can someone confirm please? It's in the web quoted specs, but not actually stated in the manual, written on the box, nor coming out the scart! To be fair I didn't really expect it to for 15ukp, and SVHS isn't a bad second option.

It is noisy, but if you cushion the player with some foam or soft towel, it is a lot better.

Press the Next button (as in, the next track button, not 'right') four times.
The current region appears at the top right (should be '2').
