Quad 66FM Tuner

Quad FM66 Tuner

Quad

The Quad 66FM Tuner Tuner first appeared in 1991 as part of the Quad Six Series which consisted of the Quad 606 Power Amplifier, Quad 306 Power Amplifier, Quad 66 Pre Amplifier and the Quad 66 CD player (superceded in 1993 by the Quad 67 CD Player).

The Quad 66FM Tuner had no buttons except for the power button at the bottom left, all the controls and functions of the tuner were done by remote control only. Even the back of the Quad 66FM Tuner was very basic, one IEC socket, one 75 ohm coaxial aerial socket and two gold plated RCA phono sockets for output and that was it. As an owner of the Quad 67 CD player, I always liked the look dark slender look of the 6 series with it’s orange display. Build quality as with all Quad equpiment was superb. From memory the Quad 66FM Tuner retailed for around £600 which was quite expensive, but it followed in the footsteps of the Quad FM4 tuner and did not disappoint when it came to sound quality.

The Quad 66FM Tuner had a larger amount of presets available than the Quad FM4 Tuner, twenty in all and was Quad’s first fully PLL Digital tuner but could only be really used with the Quad 66 Pre Amplifier because it did not come with a remote and had to rely on the Quad 66’s monster control unit. This to a certain extent affected sales somewhat although the Quad 66FM Tuner did sales did amount to 5,100 tuners in the five years it was in production up to 1996.
