Hot on the heels of the two "credit crunch" entry level FMJ products we reported on the other day, comes an absolute beast of a machine from Arcam, a state of the art seven channel high definition home cinema receiver that intends to muscle in on the far eastern competition. The Arcam FMJ AVR600 HD Receiver is not officially launched until November and will set you back a hefty £2300 in the UK, which sounds like a lot of money, but is actually extremely competitively priced when you compare the specification against the likes of the Marantz SR9600 (£2500) and the flagship Denon and Pioneer models that will set you back at least £4000.

The Arcam FMJ AVR600 HD Receiver adopts a very minimilist design ethos with most of the controls tucked away under a neat front panel. Arcam have put a huge amount of time into this product and have not rushed this product to the market but waited until the High Definition market has established itself slightly and the all important price of chipsets have come down in price. By doing this, Arcam has been able to focus a larger part of the FMJ AVR600's budget into the things that really matter - sound quality and performance. This means that not only will the FMJ cater for all the new Blu Ray/HD audio formats such as DTS-HD Master & High Resolution, Dolby TrueHD & Digital Plus but it can also at a flick of a switch turn into a high-end two channel power amplifier.

Build quality as you would expect from Arcam is superb, and it is fair to say that the AVR600 is builit like a sherman tank. Like all the other FMJ models, it uses Arcam's "Mask of Silence" and "Stealth Mat" technologies to combat electromagnetic interference (EMI) and the steel dampened chassis keeps ensures any mechanical vibrations do affect sound quality.
