Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System

The Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System is primarily aimed at the computer and multimedia market, and could make an ideal alternative to a docking station for anyone wanting to amplify an mp3 player.
Retailing for around £199, the Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System is not cheap but like all Bose's products it is well designed and looks the part. The Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System consists of a left and right satellite speaker and a sub-woofer (or acoustimass as Bose likes to call it).
I listened to Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System for about half an hour with a variety of music, my immediate criticism was the lack of integration of the sub woofer with the satellite and a slightly harsh treble. I am probably being a bit unfair to the Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System as the midrange was quite detailed and it did produced a decent soundstage, it's just I know better sound quality is available for £200 albeit in a slightly less sexy package - something where Bose products always score so highly.
Personally if I had £200 to spend I know I could take a trip down to Richer Sounds and know i can buy something sounding twice as good as the Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System and comeback with change in my pocket. Five years ago when I wanted to upgrade my multimedia speakers, I purchased a Cambridge A1mk3 SE Integrated Amplifier for £100 and partnered it with a pair of TDL Nucleus 1 Loudspeakers for £60. A quick look at Richer Sounds website today and you can still pick up the Cambridge A1mk3 Integrated Amplifier for £80 and match it to a large selection of bookshelf loudspeakers from the likes of Eltax, Gale and Mission and still have £60 change from your £200.
However it all boils down to personal preference and taste and I would imagine these Bose Companion 3 Multimedia Speaker System sell extremely well but if sound qualilty is your priority, look elsewhere.

I think your are being a tad ambitious with your thoughts on a £200 richer setup. I have extensively tested these and many richer set ups. For that price I know for a fact that the sound quality would in no way surpass these speakers.

Like I said it all boils down to personal preference.
An extra outlay of £70 will get you a pair of active Quad 11Ls loudspeakers which are currently on offer at Super-Fi.
