A new 24 hour service in glorious high res HDTV from the Discovery Channel will compliment Sky's channel line up when the much awaited HDTV service finally launches in the spring.
Discovery HD promises to "bring audiences even closer to their world with breathtaking imagery and panoramic detail", as they show series such as Sunrise Earth, Atlas and Alien Planet.
Brian Sullivan, director of customer products and services at Sky said "Sky HD will offer the best picture quality available and the addition of Discovery HD to the portfolio will enable viewers to be transported into the amazing environments featured on the channel, and Discovery HD will complete our initial channel line up for the launch of Sky HD later this year."
Sky's initial line up is expected to include the following :-
Artsworld HD

Sky Sports HD

Sky One HD

Sky Box Office HD

Sky Movies 9 HD

Sky Movies 10 HD

National Geographic HD

Discovery HD
Although Sky has still to confirm initial prices of the service, intial customers should receive a set box with 300gb hard drive with a recording time of 50 hours. After some concerns that these boxes would only come with a HDMI socket on the back, Sky has confirmed that these set top boxes will come with analogue sockets as well ( presumably RGB scart or component video), and analogue RCA phono sockets for audio output.
