Partington Super Dreadnought Speaker Stands

Partington Super Dreadnoughts
Partington

On first impressions, the Partingtons look like a couple of oil rigs, however once you get them set up with a pair loudspeakers sat on them they really begin to grow on you.

At around £160 a pair they are not cheap but believe you me they are worth every penny. Each stand is welded from laser profiled panels joined by four outer tubular steel poles with a larger square inner tube that is connected to the outer tubes by laser cut steel plate to add strength and stiffness to the design. Each of the five tubes in the design can be filled with lead shot or sand to add further dampening - three quarters filled seems to be the best compromise here, and we tested them with ordinary builders sand. Furthermore the top and bottom plates are filled underneath with a mixture of silicon-iron resin to add extra dampening. Each stand comes complete with four sets of spikes to go into the carpet, and is finished in silver or gun metal black.

also offer what they call toppers which are essentially isolation cones that sit between the speaker and the stand, but for this review we used good old bluetack to mount a pair of Quad 11L bookshelf speakers.

Immediately the sound takes on definition with improved dynamics, focussing and imaging. They really take all that undefined bass and tighten it up offering more rythym and weight and pace. In doing this, they allow the midrange to sing and the treble sweetens as well. It really is a satisfying feeling when stands bring out the best in equpment that you did not think could sound any better.

After listening to several bass heavy tracks, it was a revelation to listen to the Quads punch out those bass lines so deep and yet so taut. If you are in the market for a decent pair of stands then these should be at the top of your shopping list.
