After having enormous success with the L range of loudspeakers, Quad have significantly revised the range and the loudspeaker featured above is the Quad 11L2 which retails for just under £400. Although the current L series was introduced at the end to 2002 to much critical acclaim, to trace the history of the Quad L series you have to gp back as far the mid nineties when Quad commissioned Spendor to build them a loudspeakers that was designed to get as close to the original ESL (electrostatic) speakers as possible. The Quad 10L measured just over 12" inches tall and the design and look was very similar to L2 although the IAG takeover and factory move to China has meant that Quad is in a position to manufacture these loudspeakers at a far more competitive price - the original Quad 10L cost twice as much as the current Quad 11L2 loudspeaker, although many people managed to get hold of the Quad 10L at a knock down price when Quad were going through financial difficulties in the nineties and were subsequently sold to the Verity Group who then owned the Wharfedale and Mission brands.

So here we have the Quad 11L2 Louspeaker which are slightly small than their predecessors. Visually its is obvious that Quad 11L2 Louspeaker employs a different tweeter than before as there is no longer a visible gap between the two drive units on the front baffle like before. The tweeter on the Quad 11L2 Louspeakers is indeed brand new and features across the entire L2 range. Quad are rightly proud of the Quad 11L2 Louspeaker's tweeter which uses a neodymium magnet and a unique aluminium wound voice coil which is claimed to be able to handle greater power and provide a wider more natural frequency response way beyond the human ear's cut off point at around 20kHz.

The Quad 11L2 Louspeaker also uses an improved woofer with a far stronger sub chassis that allows the cone to react more quicker which provides for a far more accurate frequency response which is carefully and painstakingly matched with the tweeter through a minimalist yet audiophile crossover. The Quad 11L2 Louspeakers also benefits from a very solid 25mm MDF cabinet with new internal bracing which minimises internal resonance and the effects of rear radiating waves from the main drive unit.

All in all, Quad have looked at every aspect of the Quad 11L2 Louspeaker's design and where ever possible taken steps to improve the performance - even the rear bi-wirable speaker terminals have been upgraded and the finish applied to the real wood veneer seems better than it's predecessor.

To sum up for £400 or less you are getting a hell of a lot of loudspeaker in the Quad 11L2 that will be welcome in any living space not only because of the sound capability but also their luxurious furniture like finish that even the other half will find difficult not to like - simply gorgeous.
