Quad 67 CD Player

Quad 67 CD
Quad

The Quad 67 CD player is one of the best sounding cd players ever built and a product that epitomizes Quads standing in the echelons of hi-fi.

Launched in 1993 to an immediate warm reception by the hi-fi press, the Quad 67 CD quickly established itself as the one of the very best. Orignally costing £800, second hand models regulary exchange hands in excess of £500 on Ebay.

Why, you may ask - quite simply the Quad 67 CD player has one of the most musical treble and midbands that warms itself to any kind of acoustic or simple orchestral. It is not a very ‘bassy’ CD player so is not ideally suited to fast paced rock music, but slip in a copy of one Mary Black’s albums and you slowly sink into musical heaven.

If you have never listened to a Quad 67 CD player then you have missed out, they excel at the simple things and are a joy to have. My current one may have losts its orange display a long time ago, but it has no problem playing any sort of disc be it a CD, CDR or CDRW.

The Quad 67 CD Player has long been discontinued, and whilst newer models such as the Quad 99 CDP offer a more modern approach to playing CDs few have ever managed to match the sound quality of this little gem.

I have owned my quad 67 for nearly 10 years and it has performed faultlessly. Going through a 306 and 66 it really is very musical. The design is I think a classic and the remote control well that is definatively retro.

I just got my hands on a Quad 67 in mint condition. Compared to my Rotel 971 with HDCD decoder the 67 is so much better. Details, soundstage, treble is superior. In combination with renovated Quad 405-2, Quad 44, FM4 and a pair of IMF TLS 80 II speakers the 67 is just amazing.

The remote is quite ugly and it is crazy that the machine can not be operated without the remote. The orange display is impossible to see in daylight - but then again that´s typical Quad and part of the charm... First of all this thing sounds fantastic.

Could you please let me know how many 67's and 66 pre-amps were made? I don't think you mentioned on this site. Thanks

The Quad 67 was in production from mid 1993 to the end of 1996 and had sold 6,100 units before the introduction of the 7 series. The Quad 66 pre-amp on the other hand was launched in 1989 at the same time as the Quad 67's predecessor, the Quad 66CD and by the end of its production run in 1996 almost 12000 units had been made.

Hi,
Agree with all the praise for Quad 67 because I love midrange and vocals and don't give a damn about bass!
Bought this on Ebay but also agree it is a disgrace you can't use machine without remote. The remote I got is malfunctioning. Anyone got a remote for sale or know where I can get one?

Joe

Joe,

Your best bet is to contact Rob Flain at the IAG Group (Quad Owners)

Rob Flain, IAG Group Service Manager
IAG Service department, Unit 4, St Margaret's Way, Stukeley Meadows Industrial Estate, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, PE29 6EB.
Tel number: + 44 (0)1480 452561
Fax number: +44 (0)1480 413403

They are most helpful and should be able to source a replacement. I dont think any of the One 4 All type remotes will work as a replacement as I think the Quad remote control system uses a non standard but far superior German designed protocol.

Quad do supply remotes for the 67. I don't think they can supply them for the 66cd any more. Also, the 67 cd player can be operated without the remote. Put a disc in the tray and nudge it to close. It will automatically start playing. To stop just press eject. It's limited but maybe all you need.

I have found it works well with a arcam 5+ hand set and one for all.

To all of you that have trouble without a remote...
The 66 & 67 uses a philips transport and unsurprisingly Philips remotes work fine with it or Marantz and probably many others that also use the Philips transports.
As for quad remotes, Quad issued the system remote we all love or hate due to its size mainly, or they did produce a separate 'normal' black remote for the 66 & 67.
Regarding Joe Jacksons comment as a 'disgrace it cannot be used without a remote' I suppose that depends if you own a remote or not. The design concept was to minimalise the whole 6 series and either you like that or you don't. I own a few systems and obviously prefer them the way they are.
Any of my old hi-fi that uses butons suffers from paint wearing/discolouring or flaking due to the sweat/whatever presumably from my finger.
Joe I sold a 67 last year and the new owner also said they had a fault with the remote too? I had barely used it as I normally use the system remote so maybe there is an inherent fault within them or just coinicidence?

Hi,
Haven't checked this site for ages, thanks to all who responded, especially Nigel, because a Marantz remote from RC 17mark 11 (system in my study) does work with Quad. Also Nigel, am a music critic/writer and need to flick from track to track in my office, where I use teh Quad.

Great, thanks again

Hi -
Nigel - I had a problem with my remote (not the big one but the CD only one supplied by Quad) - my son used to bang it to make it work so I took it apart and found that the IR LED was dry joint on the board - I think they come loose eventually through being dropped or put down hard - hope this helps

Reading all these comments I feel lucky having bought a complete quad system 12 years ago second hand. Needless to say, it has been working faultlessly ever since. Even my CD 66 starts playing when the tray is pushed in manually! The only thing I'm afraid may give up sooner or later is the rubber belt. Does anybody out there know of any source where I could order a replacement ??? I would very much appreciate any hint or advice!

Hardy

Does anyone know the purpose of the socket just under the right-hand side of the 67's front panel? It's not mentioned in the manual.

Dan.

Martin Says:
October 4th, 2008 at 6:58 PM

The 67 uses the same case as the 66 preamp which has the same socket on the front. It is used to provide power to the 6 series system remote so that it can be used if the battery runs out. I don't know if the socket on the 67 provides the same power, I've never tried it.

I think you are correct.

Frank Says:

Lifeline: The Series 6 remote has a lead inside the battery compartment for use in cases where the battery has failed. The remote through the lifeline takes power from the front panel outlet on the Series 6 preamp, CD players (66 or 67) or FM tuner.

Other Remotes: Any Philips RC5 compliant remote will operate the functions of the CD player (66 or 67). The preamp and tuner functions use codes outside the standard RC5 range, so a more complex remote is needed to learn these - very few remotes manage it. If you want life to get complicated, try the Series 7 where information was sent to the remote by the system as well as from the system to the remote. Making this work did serious damage to the company's balance sheet.

Drawer gear pulley: The Gear Pulley for the Philips CDM-9 mechanism is available in a few places other than eBay, but the original stocks seem to be running out - gone are the days when postage cost more than the pulley! A new equivalent is listed under Zahnrad 12
at http://www.ersatzteil.justone-schnepel.de/html/unbenannt47.html for 39,90EUR!

Now, back to the music....

Hi I have a Quad CD 67 with a broken gear wheel. It looking like the original has just disintergrated, the threads have literally dropped.

Does anyone know of a replacement part and a service manual for it's replacement?

Sadly a know problem and one that we have seen many times.

The original grease on the transport wheel actually weakens/rots the the plastic gear over time.

Ebay is the best place to source a replacement part.

Hi, does anybody knows how to repair my display (Quad 66). The lights don't work

Hi-fi insight Says:
June 30th, 2009 at 9:28 AM

The display should be fine but it is illuminated by two led bulbs that will have burnt out, but these can easily be replaced.

You will need to contact IAG (see above comments) for spares.

Thanks, I opened the Quad Pre-amp 66 and there are 5 light bulbs behind the display. After I removed them, I tested them and the light bulbs are okay?

Hi,

Does Quad still change the Laser inside the Quad 67? I'm thinking about getting a 67 cd player. At the moment I have a Rotel RCD-1070 cd player.

George Says:
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Shane,

I'm almost certain Quad will replace the laser (see their website for details). However. . . do be warned that you may find the IAG Service Centre somewhat unpredictable. In the space of a few weeks I've had (a) e-mails ignored; (b) credit card details given over the phone said not to have been received (i.e. someone forgot to write them down!); (c) details repeated but CD then sent to the wrong customer; (d) repaired player returned to right address but faulty; (e) CD repaired free and returned promptly - despite my clear letter asking for its return to be deferred as I would be away on holiday. Despite all this, I would still get one. If you live within a reasonable distance a personal visit may be advisable.

really late in the day coming to this one but need help re quad 66 cd. don't have remote and am trying to locate, as per frank above, "an rc5 compliant" philips remote. really not sure what that is and via ebay I've located a possible source (http://bit.ly/3s2JSL). the shop owners aren't that clued up on what I need so should I opt for any of those shown with the RC prefix. Help appreciated.

Are ther 3 springs on transport balance for 67 cd player? Mine seems to be missing the front right, or is it designed to be just 2? I had the same problem with the plastic drive wheel, replaced it and now hard to tweak it right.

I bought an entire Quad system including 67 CD in 1993 and have had a trouble-free ride until recently. How do I replace or repair the orange LCD screen? It no longer functions. And the displays on the preamp and tuner also lack intensity. Any ideas welcome!
