Quad 12L2 Bookshelf Loudspeakers

After almost 4 years and extremely successful sales, Quad has totally over hauled its L series of loudspeakers and they are now offically in mark two guise or L2 as Quad prefer to call them.
The last couple of months has seen some real bargains in the Quad L Series of loudspeakers as dealers have slashed prices to shift old stock. If you shop around and are lucky enough you can still pick up a pair of the amazing Quad 11L bookshelf speakers for under £230, a saving of £150. Even the slightly larger Quad 12L bookshelf speakers which originally cost £499 are being advertised for under £300 on the internet.
The line up of the Quad L2 series remains the same with the exception of a new Quad 9L2 which uses a 4" woofer in comparison to the Quas 11L2's 5" woofer. Every loudspeaker in the range has undergone a major change. We have the entry level Quad 11L2 which retails for £380, the Quad 12L2 at £499, two floor standers in the Quad 21L2 and the Quad 22L2 priced at £699 and £899 respectively and finally there is the matching Quad L centre speaker at £349 and the Quad sub-woofer. All are available in stunning hand lacquered real wood veneers ranging such as maple and rosewood.
So what has changed ? Basically a new tweeter has been developed utilizing aluminium voice coils with an added heat sink to minimize thermal compression, the kevlar bass unit has been given a much stronger metal chassis that allows the driver to create bigger and more realistic dynamics and improves the midrange. Add to this a reinforced cabinet, improved speaker terminals and a new isolating plinth and you should have a winner.
The original Quad 11L and Quad 12L series when they were first launched set new standards in their respective price ranges and although the competition has caught up, these new loudspeakers still offer an extremely detailed and focussed sound which not every other loudspeaker can match, and the accuracy of the response that the Quad 12L2 can produce means that component matching is critical as they can reveal shortcomings in other equipment especially at the top end of the frequency range.
All in all these loudspeakers are very impressive, and the look and build quality simply put a lot of the competition to shame.
